Transitioning to Hydrogen Fuel Cell Powered Train Sets

An HFC powered train set uses the electricity generated from a hydrogen fuel cell to move the train.  Electrifying from hydrogen requires no overhead lines and can use existing rail infrastructure.

The conversion sequence from diesel to hydrogen powered locomotives (details here):

  • Remove the diesel motor, electrical motor generator, and associated controls.

  • In the vacated space, install hydrogen fuel cells and supporting battery equipment.

  • Install battery electric output controls, and connect electricity source power to existing locomotive axle electrical motors.

  • Install hydrogen fuel storage tanks.
